History of Kuala Lumpur

with a focus on Yap Ah Loy. Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 when Raja Abdullah, a member of the Selangor royal family, brought in tin prospectors to the muddy confluence of Sungai Gombak and Sungai Lumpur (today Sungai Klang). The first group of 87 Chinese prospectors arrived and began prospecting in the Ampang area. Within a short while, they were struck down by malaria and other pestilential conditions – as many as 69 died. Still, more tin miner came to take their place. Traders set up shop at the confluence of the two rivers, and as a frontier town was established.

Eye on Malaysia

The Eye on Malaysia is the tallest portable observation wheel in South-East Asia. The 60-metre structure is located at Titiwangsa Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (Coordinates: 3°10’39.20″N, 101°42’15.68″E)

The ferris wheel comprising of 42 gondolas (including 1 VIP one) is similar to the London Eye and has been unveiled in conjunction of Visit Malaysia Year 2007 on January 6, 2007 by Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

This giant ferris wheel allows visitors to experience a 360-degree panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur during a 12-minute ride that goes 60 metres high. It offers a magnificent view of Kuala Lumpur and over 20 kilometres of its surroundings including KL Tower, Istana Budaya and Petronas Twin Towers.

Petronas Twin Towers

The Petronas Twin Towers (also known as the Petronas Towers), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, were the world’s tallest towers from 1998 to 2004, if measured from the level of the main entrance to the structural top. Critics point out that this applies to only one of four height categories defined by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat – although the three additional height categories were only introduced as the tower neared completion in 1996, as opposed to the original category which had been in use since 1969. [1] In terms of the height to roof, as well as the height to pinnacle point it is a fair bit shorter than the Sears Tower, Chicago, United States.
